Mattiello Geneaology

Descendants of Maria ( Mum ) R. Madaio ( 1894 - 1984)  and Aniello Mattiello

Maria Rosa Madaio was born in the 11th of June, 1894 in Salerno, Italy.  Maria  came to the United States of America, to Lilly, Pennsylvania at the age of eight in 1903.  Maria came with her mother, Anna Maria [Costantino] Madaio and her brother Arcangelo, on a boat that was overcrowded and she said it had smelly fish and animals.  Maria's father, Domenico had been residing in Lilly where he worked as a miner.  He sent for his family and now you may read their names in print at Ellis Island.
Maria married at the age of fourteen on June 15, 1908 to a handsome gentleman named Aniello Mattiello.  He was twenty-five at the time of their marriage.  He came to America in 1902 from Naples, Italy where he was born April 12, 1883.  He worked in the coal mine just like his father until he got sciatica in his back and was forced to quit.   He then opened a grocery store and managed it for 55 years where Mum and Pup resided upstairs of the building.  They raise twelve children all who were born at home in Lilly. Aniello suffered from a stroke in 1957, giving up his business and moved to a new home in Altoona, Pa. with Maria.  Eight years later he was admitted to Garvey Manor where he spent the next ten years.  Aniello passed away at the age of 94 on April 2, 1976.  Marie's death came eight years later on October 15, 1984 at the age of 90.
